Sea cucumbers have a variety of edible uses. These slug-like animals are used either fresh or dried in various dishes, though the dried from is the most commonly used. Dried sea cucumber is rehydrated and added to recipes like soups, stews and stir-fries. They have a slippery texture and bland taste, so they’re usually infused with flavor from other ingredients like meats, other seafood or spices.
Sea cucumbers are echinoderms – like starfish and sea urchins. There are some 1,250 species, and many of them are indeed shaped like soft-bodied cucumbers! While some inhabit the shallows and others live in the deep ocean, they are found on or near the ocean floor – sometimes partially buried beneath it.
